The story of a young Set in 1935, the movie tells the story of a 15-year-old tomboy girl, Natty Gann (Meredith Salenger) who goes freight hopping in search of her father Sol (Ray Wise) who had to leave on almost no notice on a company bus from Chicago to the state of Washington. Ganny survives a train wreck and has several other close calls enroute to find her father.
